Burns
and Allen
Anything written about Burns and Allen has to fall short of
what they deserve. George Burns and his wonderful wife, Gracie Allen,
charmed and cheered and entertained Americans for nearly 40 years. They
added to the happiness of us all, and now, in the collections of their old
radio shows, we can all enjoy them again. What a wonderful legacy they
left. This reviewer saw George Burns, aged 90+, give an hour and a half
standup performance straight from the hip (no script) in a tribute to Gracie
who had died when they had been married and performing together for 38 years.
His performance was pure charm, pure laughter and equally enjoyed and
appreciated by all who had known and loved Gracie. George
Burns was close friends with Jack Benny...they matured in vaudeville together
and performed together often. The Burns decided, in the early 40s to
pattern their radio show after the Jack Benny style, using Gracie as the
center of attention, sparking all the problems and situations with George
being the foil. Both of them did their jobs to perfection. It is
said that, by 1940, Gracie was the best known woman in Radio. Their
shows contain a great deal of vaudevillian patter with snappy comebacks and,
as always, everything is in the greatest of good humor and loving laughter.
America had a love affair with Gracie, there's no doubt. Are these
programs to be recommended? Thoroughly and completely. You will
love them.
